Description

Renowned American jeweler David Webb (1925-1975) was deeply influenced by graphic patterns, architectural design, op art, and the Art Deco style. He embarked on his creative journey at 23 when he established his shop in 1948. His artistic vision inspires contemporary designs thanks to the wealth of Webb's jewelry designs found in the company's extensive archive. Webb's bold geometric squares, reminiscent of the off-registration style championed by American pop artist Roy Lichtenstein, draw from the silhouette of men's cufflinks and evoke the geometric aesthetics of the Art Deco era. During this period, women boldly adopted masculine attire, conveying a powerful empowerment in a world traditionally tailored for men. Women used clothing and jewelry as a political statement, urging society to reevaluate their roles and status.

Exuding the sleek and chic aesthetics of the Machine Age, these signed David Webb Contemporary Ruby Diamond Geometric Button Earrings, created in the 21st century in 2018, are meticulously handcrafted with the same level of detail and precision found in jewelry a century ago. They feature approximately 10.62 carats of calibré-cut rubies and 2.16 square-cut diamonds, set in platinum and 18K gold. These clip-back earrings are accompanied by a Certificate of Authenticity issued on July 9, 2018. The term "calibré" is derived from "calibration," meaning to divide or mark with gradations. This style of gem cutting gained popularity during the Art Deco era, as colored gemstones like rubies were custom-cut into rectangles, squares, oblongs, or other specialty shapes and set closely side by side with no visible mounting. Rubrics and diamonds are meticulously arranged in these earrings to create an industrial and graphic effect. Each earring presents a 5 x 5 grid of rubies appearing to overlap a 5 x 5 grid of diamonds, resulting in a captivating visual interplay. The three gold accents on each side of the composition bear a Cubist influence, characteristic of the 1920s. True to David Webb's signature style, every detail contributes to the overall drama and, in this case, creates distinct layers and varying elevations.

These clip-back earrings can be worn as dress clips, perfectly complementing a square neckline, in keeping with the Art Deco fashion of the era. Such a choice would surely meet David Webb's approval.

Each earring measures approximately 1 inch square, with rubies totaling around 10.62 carats and square-cut diamonds weighing about 2.16 carats. With a combined weight of around 23.76 grams, these earrings are meticulously crafted from platinum and 18K gold, bearing the signature of David Webb, and were created around 2018.
