De Ambrosi Black Mother-of-Pearl Diamond Butterfly Brooch

A butterfly is a hopeful symbol of transformation, a miraculous metamorphosis into something exquisitely beautiful. This luminescent Signed De Ambrosi Butterfly Brooch, made in Italy in the 21st century, depicts this delicate creature in all its newfound glory, featuring black mother-of-pearl widespread wings, fully surrounded with a halo of pavé diamonds set in 18K white gold. As with many De Ambrosi pieces in mother-of-pearl, the custom halo delicately traces the outline, yet also gives the illusion of squeezing the shape with a pressure so gentle yet constant that the lustrous volumetric form seems to burst forth from its sparkling white gold confines.

Adorning the winged surface are 7 pear-shape diamonds bezel-set and scattered asymmetrically in groups of 3, 2, 1 and 1 with 1 more pear-shape diamond punctuating the top of the diamond-bespeckled body. The total diamond weight of the 2.38 x 3-inch (6.05 x 7.62 cm) double pinstem brooch is approximately 2.76 carats, most of G-H color and VS clarity. While the butterfly wings are depicted as fluffy stylized clouds, the body cuts in with a decisive curve composed of gleaming 18K white gold, softened a bit with an asymmetrical placement of diamonds. The reverse side reveals more of the fine artistry and craftsmanship of the Italian jewelry house. A butterfly-like open structure made in white gold, that is almost as lyrical as the front, holds the pinstem back away from the mother-of-pearl, so the creature seems to float when worn. There is azuring in the metal beneath the diamond halo. Azuring is a technique that adds hours to the fabrication, where shaped cutouts are hand-carved behind each stone to let light in and amplify the sparkle.

Black mother-of-pearl has a blackish-greyish background with pearlescence over the entire surface and violet to green iridescence. Mother-of-pearl, also known as nacre, is a resilient and iridescent organic-inorganic composite material produced by some mollusks as an inner shell layer. It is also the material of which pearls are composed. Unlike pearls, mother-of-pearl has a flat surface. Moreover, it can be carved and shaped into unique designs. De Ambrosi is able to push the feminine qualities of the lustrous surface to make it look three dimensional and voluptuous. Renowned for its superior craftsmanship; particularly in lapidary, De Ambrosi was established in 1949 by Remo Deambrosi in Valenza, Piedmont, Italy, and became known for creating splendid hand-carved cabochon shapes.
