Description

There is something about each modern minimalist jewel from the House of Graff that is unmistakably and breathtakingly elegant. Their stark diamond-centric designs expertly balance dark and light, shape and space, geometry and lyricism. Referencing glamourous moments in jewelry history from the last hundred years, these Gradd Contemporary Diamond Sapphire Rosette Drop Earrings, made in circa 2010s, are crafted in 18K white gold with a dynamic configuration of four articulated segments. The earrings feature 22 diamonds weighing an estimated total of 2.26 carats of D-F color and VS+ clarity and 24 sapphires weighing an estimated total of 4.61 carats. A central open ring that might symbolize eternity and timeless beauty draws the eye in. Two sapphire rosettes arranged at diagonals beautifully frames the face. This mirror image pair is outfitted with posts for pierced ears and measures 1.6 inch long (4 cm) by 0.5 inch wide (1.2 cm).

Rosettes are floral depictions built up out of several gemstones, widely used in the 15th and early 16th centuries to make the most out of small stones, grouping them together to make larger looking gems. These rosettes stylistically harken back to those en vogue during the 1950s when simpler, more classic ultra-feminine styles were presented. The cheerful rounded rosettes are set with 5 evenly spaced shared prongs in 18K white gold that punctuate the center of each flower with a delicate detail. As a whole, the composition evokes new life and the beauty of nature, with fresh blooms arranged with a carefree charm.

The reverse side of the jewels reveals another dimension of sculptural beauty—Graff’s exquisite craftsmanship and innovative jewelry making skill. Each rosette is set in a cluster setting, which produces a different and unusual look for jewelry items. In this setting, multiple small stones are mounted together in a group around a larger sized central stone. Generally, cluster settings present flower shaped designs in a multi layered circular form, such as this one. Often used in nature inspired designs such as flowers and butterflies, cluster settings give the appearance of a single large gemstone from a short distance. These earrings also borrow a technique that was popular during the Art Deco period. Two graduated round diamonds convincingly fill the dangling teardrop shape that culminates at the bottom of the earrings. At this time, clever trompe l’oeil settings were used to transform a grouping of smaller stones and give the appearance of larger custom shapes.

Measures approx. 1.6 inch in length (4 cm), 0.5 inch wide (1.2 cm). 22 diamonds weighing approx. 2.26 carats total, D-E-F color, VS+ clarity. 24 sapphires weighing approx. 4.61 carats total.
