Graff Vintage Diamond Pave Double Hoop Earrings

Graff jewels have an unmistakable quality. Their minimalist diamond-centric designs are breathtakingly elegant and feature gems of unparalleled rarity, perfection, and unrivalled beauty. Laurence Graff (1938- ) started his London-based jewelry house in 1960 when he was only 22 and opened a second shop just two years later. With an abiding love for diamonds, he has probably handled more important examples than any other diamantaire of our time. Early in his career, he met a diamond dealer whom he persuaded to advance him 33 small diamonds for £60. Instead of making 33 individual rings, he placed them all on one ring, creating “a big flash of diamonds.” The ring sold quickly, and he had an immediate order for another.

Crafted in 18K white gold and made in the 21st century, circa 2000s, these Vintage Diamond Pave Double Hoop Earrings exemplify that Graff signature flair, taking a contemporary classic—the ubiquitous hoop—and rotating it 90 degrees. Faced out, the form is transformed into something dynamic like a chandelier earring where the diamonds dazzle with the wearer’s every movement. The clip-back earrings, measuring 2.5 inches (6.35 cm) in length, are articulated at two points, and set with 298 round diamonds weighing approximately 17.69 carats total in F-G color and VVS-VS clarity. Each exquisite gemstone is arrayed in stylish symmetry, framing the face in a radiant glow.

In this straightforward minimalist composition, the geometric flow of diamonds around nested perfect circles is simple and measured. The way the two hoops are gathered at the top is brilliantly imitated in the diamond and smaller hoop above. Such small details become achingly beautiful and poetic in this stark context. Like the growing warmth of the sun at sunrise, one single graduated row of diamonds at the top of each curve gives rise to two equally sized smaller stones arranged side by side. As the design culminates, the diamonds grow too, ever so gradually and artfully until the larger stones are staggered at the bottom of the curve. The barely perceptible skillful graduation of diamonds is repeated in the small open circles from which the double hoops are suspended.

As with minimalism in art, there is no representation of an outside reality. Instead, the artist wants the viewer to respond only to what is in front of them—in this case, diamonds, 18K gold, and open circles. The medium, or material from which it is made, and the form of the work is the reality. The earrings are stamped with Graff signature and serial number. The number and copy of a paper from Graff will be provided to potential buyers. The earrings are clip back but can be changed by a jeweler to a post option for pierced ears.
